What to Look for in Soccer Game Video - Player Perspective

Whether you’re watching full 90-minute matches or individual clips of the plays you were involved in, you need to make the most out of every minute you’re watching game film.

And to help you boost the effectiveness of the time you’ve spent in front of the footage, knowing what to watch out for can definitely help you make the most of your time!

Depending on your position, your weaknesses on the field, and how the game itself is going, those critical points to look out for may chance.

We’re going to go over a few aspects to look out for to help you improve your game by breaking down those skills by position:

Goalkeepers

Although your main goal is to deny entry to goals from the other team, you can still catch critical moments—both with and without the ball around.

By watching what you do and looking out for these skills, you can improve your game in the goal--

  • Your Distributions: Passes on the ground, punts, throws, roll outs, pass backs, and goal kicks. Take note to see if the choices you made were the best ones at the time. Take note of the distance of your throws and punts—can you get further?

  • Defending an Attack: When the ball is coming your way on an attack or a shot has been fired, how’s your footwork? How about your body positioning?

  • Your Positions: Whether an attack is coming your way or there is a set play against your team, your positioning can make the difference between a save and a goal against.

Defenders

Not only should you be focused on your defensive effort, but you are also the first line of offense, too. Here are some things to look out for--

  • Your Defensive Skills: How did you do on a 1v1? Was your positioning correct? Did you jump in too early? Take a look at how you did in both in-game situations on the counter-attack and in set plays.

  • Your Offensive Choices: If you’re taking a ball out of the air and choosing where to go next with it, what you do with the ball can make the difference between having the attack come right back at you or moving forward in a goal-scoring opportunity.

Midfielders

As a pivotal part of both the offense and the defense, you need to be a reliable player in your actions and in-game decisions. Pinpoint how you do with your--

  • First Touch: In order to gain control of the ball and continue moving play forward, your first touch needs to be optimal (and this isn’t limited to just midfielders)! Your ball control also can help get you out of tight spaces, which often happens in the midfield.

  • Possession Percentage: As a key part of the possession, you need to make sure that every pass you’re making is as close to your teammate as possible! If you’re playing out wide, take a look at your crosses, and make sure they’re getting to their target, too.

  • Where’s Your Head At?!: Being in the middle of the field has its advantages, but it also takes a bit more responsibility from your side to know what’s going on around you at all times!

Forwards

At the end of the day, you should be doing your best effort to put away chances. So, how do you make sure that you’re doing that effectively come game time? Make sure you focus on your--

  • Runs: Knowing where to run, when to do it, and your timing can mean the difference between getting the ball at the right time and position and missing it or getting it intercepted by the defense.

  • Your Dribbling: Focusing on your pace, change of speed, technical ability in turning, and timing can help you figure out what you need most to work on!

  • Your Goal Percentage: Point out your technique, your ability to use both feet, and putting yourself in a good position to get yourself to the goal.

By focusing on these aspects throughout the game—and so many more—you can maximize your effort when you watch film. What you find during film can then be brought into training and finally, into your next game!
